Heavy Rotation: Jake Muir and Evan Caminiti, “Talisman”

今回の聞き逃しレビューはカリフォルニア出身、ベルリン在住のアーティストJake Muirとエレクトロニックプロデューサ Evan Caminitiによるダークアンビエントの怪作『Talisman』です。

以前Muirの作品『Mana』を紹介しましたが、こちらはイルビエントと呼ばれるジャンルを取り上げた仕上げたダークアンビエントの傑作でした。MuirのサウンドコラージュとCaminitiのシンセサイザーの深い音像が、怪しい雰囲気を醸し出す『Talisman』。癒しとしてのアンビエントミュージックに中指を立てるように、不気味なサウンドが全体を支配しています。絶対にこれを聞いてヨガはできません。

私の始めたポッドキャスト The Idle Hour も元は人々に癒しを与えるための生活音を収録し、発信するためのアンビエント系ポッドキャストとして始動しました。しかし、いざ録音を始めてみると、日常の自分ではコントロールできない、どちらかというと「不快な音」が癒し（と多くの人が認知する）のアンビエンスに侵入してきたのです。だから彼らの「Ambient-not-ambient」に共感してしまいます。

This time around we will take a quick look at "alisman, a dark “ambient-not-ambient” output from California-born, Berlin-based artist Jake Muir and the electronic producer Evan Caminti.

We previously featured Muir's impressive illbient experiment, "Mana." With "Talisman," the two Californians are exploring much darker side of ambient music which has a deep and a little uncomfortable sonic atmosphere. The eerie sound dominates the entire piece, as if to give a middle finger to ambient music as means of healing. It is gorgeously somber and beautifully meditative (in a sense I’m lying in the coffin). But it’s probably not the right music to bring your lululemon pants to.

When I started my own podcast The Idle Hour, its original concept was to bring healing energy from everyday sounds to the listeners. However, when I started recording, I realized that I have no control over what we perceive us unpleasant; a drunken guy singing Ice Ice Baby in the park or an airport lady who screams ‘Corona is not gone tomorrow!’, for example. They won’t heal people. They just exist, unbothered, uncontrolled and irrelevant to my concept. So in a weird, “ambient-not-ambient” way that they describe their collaboration, I can relate not just treating ambient music as a healing device, but letting the timber of sound provoke listeners.
