“The Idle Hour” Is A Podcast Without The Speaking

I am starting a podcast. And it’s called THE IDLE HOUR. The first episode airs on August 1st and I am very stoked by it. Here’s what the podcast is about.

Imagine a podcast without the talking. Only the sounds of daily life flowing freely, quietly and unintended. Each episode consists of an hour-long recording of the lights and music creator Teshima’s everyday life. In an hour nothing or everything can happen. Listeners can only visualize from the comforting, ambient noise of everyday.

When I heard from a friend that Ambient music is one of the most listened genres on streaming websites, I was surprised. Then I learned people tune in to it to improve their productivity. I began to wonder: what if I start a podcast that has no speech? Just the sounds of my room for an hour? If ASMR triggers some physical pleasure from extremely close sounds, what kind of emotions/value can environmental sounds of someone can really bring? That’s when I came up with the idea of THE IDLE HOUR.

This podcast is also inspired by an album by Eliane Radigue called Triptich. The French electronic composer dedicated herself trying to create the sounds of nature using synthesisers. Although Tripitch was commissioned for a dance performance, the album sounds like you stuck your head in the freezer for an hour. It can be interpreted as the waves of ocean too, quietly flowing. I wanted to incorporate this experience into a podcast to give new meanings to its speech centric format.

Thank you Luis Vega for helping me shape the concept. This beautifully moody and peeping-tom-esque visual is made by talented Christina Chu . Thank you for always keeping up with my non-descriptive descriptions and requests. Last but not least, Gabriela for proofreading my English. I hope you like it!

First episode of The Idle Hour is available on August 1st on Apple Music.
